For the 2014 season, Candle was withdrawn from the receivers, a coaching position that Derek Sage took over instead, and instead used as coach of the quarterbacks , but remained offensive coordinator.

Head coach

After the 2015 regular season ended, Campbell left Toledo for Iowa State and Candle planned to move with him. However, Candle was offered the role of head coach for the Rockets, which moved him to stay in Toledo. His first game as head coach was the bowl game for which the Rockets had qualified. In the Boca Raton Bowl , Candle celebrated his first victory as head coach with 32:17 over the Temple Owls . For this achievement he was named MAC Coach of the Year (Conference Trainer of the Year). In the Championship Game , the Rockets defeated the Akron Zips 45:28 , making Candle the MAC for the first time. On December 15, 2017, his contract was prematurely extended by two years, which ties him to Toledo until 2023.

style

As a player, his head coach at Mount Union, Larry Kehres , certified that he was a precise pass route runner , had a good instinct and good catching skills.

As a coach, Candle is considered a great recruiter who can build good relationships with high school players and coaches. On the offensive, he primarily relies on formations with one running back and one tight end each , which enables the change from spread offense to power run offense without changing personnel. In addition, it is versatility in mind, so both the passing game and the running game come into play.
