history
Temple University was founded in 1884 by lawyer Russell Conwell , who came to Pennsylvania in 1882 to direct Grace Baptist Church. In the evenings, he taught workers to keep up their work schedules. These students, later known as "night owls," were educated in the basement of Conwell's Baptist Temple (hence the origin of the university's name and mascot). A temporary board of trustees was established and the board appointed Russell H. Conwell President of The Temple College. Within the following months, Grace Baptist Church appointed a new board of trustees, printed official approval files, and issued shares to raise funds for new teaching facilities. In 1888 Conwell received a charter for "The Temple College". His founding vision for the school was to provide academically gifted and highly motivated students, regardless of their background or resources, excellent educational opportunities. 1892, 18 Conwell Class graduates, including 4 women, received the Bachelor of Oratory. The college was also granted honorary degrees, and one of the earliest recipients was Conwell, who received doctor of pinity and doctor of laws degrees. In 1907 the college became university and in 1908 the University Council Temple was listed as one of the state higher education institutions.
