Joanna Pascale (born February 25, 1979 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American jazz singer who works part-time as a university teacher.

Life

Pascale grew up in Philadelphia. As the daughter of a strictly religious mother, she was not allowed to listen to secular music as a child. In her early teens, she heard about Billie Holiday's Good Morning Heartache , which gave her life a new direction. She discovered Sarah Vaughan , Nancy Wilson, and Jimmy Scott , and that her grandfather had been an amateur jazz musician. From then on she attended the Settlement Music School , later the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts . As a 15-year-old tenth grader, she took over the office of cantor in the Catholic St. Philip Neri Church , which she was responsible for for many years.

She graduated from Boyer College of Music and Dance at Temple University in 2004 in Jazz Studies ; her teachers included Terell Stafford and Bruce Barth . Pascale stayed after graduating and has since worked part-time as a university professor and coordinator of jazz vocal studies.

Pascale performed three times a week with the house band at the Philadelphia jazz club Sole Food for around a decade. During this time she released three albums and expanded her repertoire to over 400 songs. She also toured with the Ed Vezinho / Jim Ward Big Band. She sang on Jeremy Pelt's album Soul (HighTone 2011) as well as Orrin Evans Orrin Evans Live All over The Place (2009).
