Moosonee is a settlement of just over 1,700 people in northern Ontario , Canada . The place was founded in 1903 as a base for the French fur trading company Revillon Frères in competition with the Hudson's Bay Company .
The village houses a small hospital, a lodge (hotel), some shops and the Moose Factory, an old base for English trappers, located on an island in the Moose River. The native Cree make up 80 percent of the population.

Moosonee is located on the Moose River , an approximately 80 km long river that is fed by the Mattagami and Missinaibi rivers . The village Moosonee itself is not far from the Hudson Bay belonging to James Bay removed in the Moose River empties.
traffic
Moosonee does not have a road connection. The last road ends in Otter Rapids , 140 km south of Moosonee. The settlement is connected to the nearby town of Moose Factory by water taxi .
Moosonee has a small port (the southernmost of Hudson Bay), a landing pad for airplanes, and the terminus of the railway line to Moosonee operated by the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission . The station is important for the supply of the place and is served by the Polar Bear Express five times a week. The airfield is integrated into the Air Creebec route network . The small planes fly from Timmins to Moosonee, and there are connecting flights to Fort Albany , Kashechewan , Attawapiskat and Peawanuck in Ontario and Waskaganish (also Rupert's House ) in Québec .

In addition to a branch of the Northern College, the Canadian Ministry of Nature Conservation, the Rail Car and Revillon Frères Museum and organizations for canoe tours on the surrounding waters are represented here.
