The Diocese of Moosonee ( Latin Dioecesis Musonitana , English Diocese of Moosonee ) was one in Canada situated Roman Catholic diocese , based in Moosonee . On December 3, 2018, Pope Francis united the diocese with the Hearst diocese to form the Hearst-Moosonee diocese .

history

On December 3, 1938, Pope Pius XI established out of territory of the Diocese of Haileybury and the Apostolic Vicariate Northern Ontario , the Apostolic Vicariate of James Bay established. Its territory included northern Ontario and part of Quebec . The James Bay Apostolic Vicariate was founded on July 13, 1967 by Pope Paul VI. raised to the diocese and renamed the diocese Moosonee . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Keewatin-Le Pas as a suffragan . The part of its territory belonging to Québec was given by the Diocese of Moosonee to the Diocese of Amos on May 31, 2007 , so that its area only consisted of northern Ontario. On December 3, 2018, Pope Francis united the Diocese of Moosonee with the Diocese of Hearst to form the Diocese of Hearst-Moosonee . This is subordinate to the Archdiocese of Ottawa as a suffragan. The previous Bishop of Hearst, Robert Bourgon , who had administered the Diocese of Moosonee as Apostolic Administrator since 2016 , was appointed Bishop of the united Diocese.
