The Mattagami River ( French Rivière Mattagami ) is a river in the Hudson Bay catchment area in northern Ontario in Canada .

geography

The Mattagami River has a total length of 443 km (from the end of Lake Minissinakwa). The course of the river lies in the area of the Canadian Shield . It flows through Timmins and continues north to Portage Island in the north of the Cochrane District . Here the Mattagami, together with the Missinaibi River, forms the Moose River - about 100 km from its confluence with James Bay . The river flows through the town of Timmins as well as Smooth Rock Falls .

At the point where the Groundhog River and Kapuskasing River flow into the Mattagami River, the Ontario Power Generation operates a dam that is over 5 km long.

The name of the Mattagami River comes from the Ojibwe language and means either “beginning of the water” ( maadaagami ) or “turbulent water” ( madaagami ).

As part of the Lower Mattagami project , OPG has been increasing power plant capacities on the lower reaches of the Mattagami River since 2010. This is done in collaboration with the Moose Cree First Nation .

The Smoky Falls hydropower plant has been renewed since 2011 and will receive 3 turbines with a total output of 267.9 MW. Since 2010, the Harmon and Kipling hydropower plants have each received an additional 78.3 MW turbine, and Little Long an additional 66.5 MW turbine.

In addition, the Wawaitin , Sandy Falls and Lower Sturgeon hydropower plants on the upper reaches of the Mattagami River were completed at the end of 2010 and replace obsolete previous structures. With Island Falls , a new hydropower plant is being built on the river.
