Groundhog River ( French Rivière Groundhog ) is a river in the Canadian province of Ontario .

It has its origins in the in Sudbury District altitude lake Horwood Lake . From there it flows north for about 210 km before flowing into the Mattagami River from the left . The outflow from Horwood Lake is regulated by a dam operated by Ontario Power Generation for the downstream hydropower plants on the Mattagami River. The river is named after the woodchuck (English "groundhog").

Hydropower plants

The Carmichael Falls hydroelectric power station operated by Brookfield is located 18 km south of Fauquier and has an output of 20 MW with 2 turbines.
