The Horwood Lake is a lake in the north of the Sudbury District in the Canadian province of Ontario .
Horwood Lake is 90 km southwest of the city of Timmins in the area of the Canadian Shield at an altitude of 331 m . The 57 km² lake is Y-shaped. It has a narrow arm to the south, a narrow arm to the northeast, and a very wide bay to the north. The maximum north-south length of the lake is 30 km. The northeast arm measures 17 km. The Horwood Peninsula separates the two northern parts of the lake. The largest island in the lake, East Marsh Island , lies in the northern part of the water.
The catchment area of Horwood Lake covers 3370 km². The main tributary is the Woman River , which flows into the southern end of the lake. At the northern end of the lake, the Groundhog River , a left tributary of the Mattagami River , leaves Horwood Lake to the neighboring smaller lake Armstrong Lake . The mean discharge is 35 m³ / s. The amount of water draining off is regulated. This should ensure optimal utilization of the downstream hydropower plants.
Horwood Lake is a fishing destination and is easily accessible via Ontario Highway 101, which runs approximately 9 km north of the lake . Mainly glass ey perch and pike are caught in the lake .
