Ivanhoe River is a river in the Sudbury and Cochrane districts of the Canadian province of Ontario .

The river has its origin in Halsey Township in the Unorganized North Sudbury District . From there it flows in a northerly direction. He crosses the Canadian Pacific Railway , which Via Rail uses for the Sudbury - White River route.

The river continues on its way north. It flows through the lakes South Ivanhoe Lake and Halsey Lake , takes the right tributary Kinogama River and reaches the southern end of the lake Ivanhoe Lake .

Ivanhoe Lake Provincial Park is located on Ivanhoe Lake . Ivanhoe Lake has two outflows on its north bank: in the northeast the Ivanhoe River (New Channel) and in the northwest the Ivanhoe River (Old Channel) . The New Channel forms the main drain and is regulated by the Ivanhoe Lake Dam . This controls the amount of water for the downstream hydropower plants. The Muskego River flows into the New Channel from the east . The two arms of the Ivanhoe River reunite at Foleyet , about 10 km north of the lake. At Foleyet, Highway 101 and the Canadian National Railway cross the Ivanhoe River.

Another 15 km downstream, the Shawmere River flows into the Ivanhoe River from the left. The river flows north. He passes the Chute rapids and reaches the Cochrane District. From the left, the Ivanhoe River joins the Paypeeshek River. He is now turning to the east. Here he passes the rapids of the Three Falls . The Ivanhoe River then turns north again and meets the Groundhog River , a tributary of the Mattagami River, coming from the east .

Use of hydropower

On the Ivanhoe River, the construction of dams with associated hydroelectric power stations is planned at two locations ( The Chute and Third Falls ). The planning is carried out by Xeneca Power Development. The planned output of the two power plants is to be 8.7 MW.
