The Free Elementary School Solothurn (FVS) was a reform pedagogical school in the Solothurn area in Switzerland .

history

The school was conceived and established in 1987 and 1988. The founders included the teachers Rita Brotschi and Suzanne Stauffer, who later also shaped the school pedagogically.

In April 1988, the primary school (1st to 6th grade) was offered first, and from 1996 the orientation level up to 9th grade. In 2008 the basic level was introduced for children from four to around eight years of age. In July 2010 the school was closed due to insufficient student numbers.

Pedagogically, the school was based on Célestin Freinet and Maria Montessori . The concept included: day school with block times, appraisal interviews without grades, small multi-year learning groups, lunch with the support of parents, religious instruction in the form of an annual religion week , project work in material classes and regular gender-segregated lessons and project weeks.

Schools took place one after the other in several buildings: first in the “Hexenburg” in Solothurn, then on Gartenstrasse in Langendorf and from 2007 in the Gotthelfhaus in Biberist. The school was run by the non-profit association Freie Volksschule Solothurn.

Pioneering day school

The FVS was designed as a day school from the start. In 1991, when asked about the free elementary school, the school director of the city of Solothurn mentioned that there was a need for a day school, although “not huge”. The FVS also reported supra-regionally as a model school . Although the director of education in the canton of Solothurn recognized the advantages of day schools, in 2002 the FVS was still the only day school for the entire compulsory schooling period in the canton. The city of Solothurn has been offering day schools since 2008.

Gender-specific teaching

In September 1992 the school held a gender-segregated girls 'and boys' week for the first time. From 1999 these weeks were held every year. There were also weekly gender specific lessons.

reception

The school's public works include:

  • the panel discussion on the subject of “denationalisation of schools”, which was co-organized in 1993 by the Association of Independent Schools in Switzerland (VfSS) in Solothurn, in which educational exponents from various cantons took part.
  • the illustrated bilingual pyramid novel “Mille Chemins - Many roads lead to the goal”, with a beginning and 23 ends. In 2001 it was written by students of the FVS and the «École de La Grande Ourse» in La Chaux-de-Fonds .

Sponsorship award

In 2002, the school received the “Sprungfeder” award from the Association of Kindergarten Teachers in Solothurn (now the Kindergarten Teachers Group of the Association of Teachers in Solothurn LSO) for its sustainable work in favor of a gender-equitable school.
