Fort Albany, located on the Albany River , is a fort founded by the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) in 1670 to develop the fur trade with the First Nations . It is one of the oldest and once most important forts of the HBC.
Infrastructure and economy
Fort Albany can be reached by sea via James Bay . The village has no direct connection to the Canadian road network. Only in winter can the village be reached via a so-called winter road. It is also possible to arrive by plane, as the town has its own airport Fort Albany Airport (IATA: YFA, ICAO: CYFA). Daily flights are possible with the airline Air Creebec. There are seasonal job opportunities in the construction industry and in government projects. Large parts of the population receive state support. Traditional local job opportunities are hunting and fishing.
Language and religion
Large parts of the population speak the local Cree Mushkegowuk Cree language and English and belong to the Roman Catholic faith. At the same time, however, shamanism is practiced and shamanism is gaining great influence again.
Location and history
The neighborhoods Moose Factory and Rupert House are also former forts of the HBC. The development of the area took place in the period from 1675 to 1679 by Charles Baylay on foot and by water (e.g. over the English River, Winnipeg River, Lac Seul) with canoes.
