Dom João de Oliveira Matos Ferreira (born March 1, 1879 in Valverde , Portugal , † August 29, 1962 in Guarda , Portugal) was a Portuguese clergyman and Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in Guarda .

Life

João de Oliveira Matos Ferreira was born the son of the primary school teacher Antonio de Oliveira Matos Ferreira and had four brothers, one of whom also became a priest . After graduating from high school in Castelo Branco , he attended the seminary in Guarda. He was ordained a priest on March 28, 1903 . This was followed by a position as secretary to the Primate of Portugal and Archbishop of Braga , Manuel Vieira de Matos . From 1920 to 1923 he was Apostolic Visitator in the Diocese of Guarda . On December 11, 1922 he was appointed by Pope Pius XI. appointed auxiliary bishop in Guarda and titular bishop of Aureliopolis in Lydia . On July 25, 1923, the Bishop of Guarda, José Alves Matoso , gave him episcopal ordination . Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Braga, Manuel Vieira de Matos, and the Bishop of Beja , José do Patrocinio Dias . In this office he served 39 years until his death.

Auxiliary Bishop de Matos Ferreira became known through the establishment of the Liga dos Servos de Jesus ("League of the Servants of Jesus"), an organization that works for poor children and gets them off the streets; the first establishment abroad took place in 2012 in Angola .

Adoration

On June 3, 2013, in the opening process of beatification, Pope Francis established the heroic degree of virtue and made João de Oliveira Matos Ferreira a venerable servant of God . A miracle recognized by the curia authority is still missing for the process to proceed. A small museum has been set up in Dom João's birthplace in Valverde. He is buried in the Capela de Outeiro in the Igreja São Miguel in Guarda.
