Valverde is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Fundão . It has 1,399 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

Finds prove a local settlement by Celtiberians and Romans . Presumably, the current place was created in connection with the establishment of the nearby Fundão. In the registers of King D. Dinis collected in 1290 , Valverde is not yet mentioned due to its lack of relevance. In 1320 the place was already a municipality with its own church, and was officially recorded for the first time with the surveys under King D. João I in 1395 .

Attractions

The Fonte da Galé fountain, originally from Roman times, is one of the local monuments . Furthermore, various sacred buildings are listed, including the single-nave baroque church Igreja Paroquial de Valverde (also Igreja de São Miguel ) from the 18th century, which dates back to a first church from 1320.
