Proença-a-Nova is a vila (small town) and a district ( concelho ) in Portugal with 4248 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
The place received its first town charter ( Foral ) in 1244 , still under the name Cortiçeiro (from Portuguese : Cortiça , German: cork). In the course of his administrative reforms, King Manuel I confirmed the town charter in 1512 , which at the same time changed the place name to Vila Melhorada (German: improved small town). In the 16th century the place got its current name.
In the course of the Napoleonic wars on the Iberian Peninsula , the place suffered severe destruction by the French troops around 1810. In the course of the liberal revolution that followed in Portugal , the previously absolutist-minded population turned to the liberals. When absolutist troops camped here on the way to the liberal Coimbra in 1828 , the soldiers were persuaded by the population to rise and join the finally victorious uprising of the liberals.
Until 1834, Proença-a-Nova belonged to the Santarém district , and since then has been part of the Castelo Branco district .
Culture and sights
The numerous protected monuments of the district include historical public buildings, fountains, historical houses, and a variety of sacred buildings , including the main church Igreja Paroquial de Proença-a-Nova (also Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção ), a rebuilt in the 18th century , baroque and Mannerist elements pointing church from the 16th century. The Roman bridge of Proença-a-Nova, the Ponte Romana do Malhadal , is also a listed building.
Proença-a-Nova has a city park, the Jardim de Santa Margarida , and two river baths with extensive infrastructure , of which the Praia Fluvial de Aldeia Ruiva was recognized as being particularly suitable for the disabled.
The village of Figueira is part of the route of the Aldeias do Xisto , the traditional slate villages of the region connected by hiking trails and jointly marketed. Of the eight signposted hiking trails in the Proença district, the PR8 begins in Proença-a-Nova itself and ends in Figueira. Proença-a-Nova is also part of the Naturtejo Geopark , along the PR2 and PR6 hiking trails , Miradouros offer views of rock formations, natural lakes and waterfalls, and bird watching is also possible here.
A number of Turismo rural houses are housed in mostly historical buildings.
