Like her older sister Amália Rodrigues , Celeste began to sing Fado as a child. However - in contrast to Amália - she consistently refused any further development outside of the traditional Lisbon Fado until her death and sang mainly in traditional Fado bars. Even so, both sisters occasionally performed together.

Career

After the Carnation Revolution in 1974 she went to Canada for six months, where her marriage to the actor Varela Silva was divorced. She commuted between her two residences, Lisbon and Washington, where her two daughters live. Even if she did not achieve a career nearly as extensive as her sister, she was able to record successes with recordings such as Lenda das Algas (Legend of the algae), Já é tarde (It's already late) and the symbolic Fado Celeste .

She performed until her death; for example on January 24, 2012 at Carnegie Hall in New York. In 2013 she took part in the highly acclaimed Companheiros de Aventura ("Adventure Companions") project by rock singer Tim . On June 10, 2012, the national holiday of Portugal Day , she was awarded the Order of Infante Dom Henrique by President Cavaco Silva with the rank of commander.

Recently, the media reported about Celeste Rodrigues after-American US pop singer to an invitation of the Madonna through New Year 2017 celebrated in New York. Madonna then published photos of hugs with her on Instagram and called her a "legendary singer".
