The Dia de Portugal, de Camões e das Comunidades Portuguesas ( German  day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese municipalities ), Dia de Portugal for short ( German  Portugal day ), is the Portuguese national holiday , which is celebrated on June 10th every year. The date refers to the death of the national poet Luís de Camões , who wrote the national epic The Lusiads .

history

A week after the First Portuguese Republic was proclaimed, a decree was published on October 12, 1910, intended to reorganize the national holidays. In the course of the secularization, some public holidays were canceled, at the same time all municipalities were given the opportunity to determine their own public holiday, adapted to local traditions and festivities. In the city of Lisbon , June 10th was chosen in honor of Luís de Camões. Republican forces in Lisbon tried to lower the popularity of the near-time celebrations in honor of the patron saint Anthony on June 13th.

During the authoritarian Estado Novo , Dictator Salazar made June 10 a national holiday in honor of the Portuguese victims of the colonial wars under the name “Day of Camoes, Portugal and the Portuguese Race”. After the Carnation Revolution , the holiday was given its current name. To this end, the concept of race was replaced with a reference to the Portuguese diaspora, in which the Dia de Portugal is celebrated by Portuguese all over the world today.
