José Hermano Saraiva (born October 3, 1919 in Leiria , † July 20, 2012 in Setúbal ) was a Portuguese historian , lawyer , politician and diplomat . He was best known in Portugal for television programs about the history of the country.

Life

Saraiva was born in Leiria in 1919, the son of the history professor José Saraiva (1881-1946) and the younger brother of the later professor of literary history and activist of the Portuguese Communist Party , António José Saraiva (1917-1993). He completed a law degree (graduated in 1941) and a degree in philosophy of history (graduated in 1942) at the University of Lisbon . He then worked as a lawyer and taught at secondary schools and universities, such as the Instituto Superior de Ciências Sociais e Política Ultramarina and the Faculdade de Letras of the University of Lisbon.

From 1968 to 1970 he was education minister in the government of Marcelo Caetano , of the Estado Novo regime, and was confronted with the student unrest (crise académica) , particularly at the University of Coimbra in 1969. In 1972 he was Portuguese ambassador to Brazil until the Carnation Revolution in 1974, after which he no longer held any official office. He now became known for television programs about the history of Portugal.

reception

On the one hand, he developed important works on the history of Portugal, including his six-volume standard work História de Portugal (Publicações Alfa, Lisbon 1981). On the other hand, his work was not always undisputed among historians, for example in relation to the dictatorship established by Salazar , which Saraiva had served in various positions.

Saraiva has become a well-known personality in Portugal, especially with his television programs and his precise, vivid way of conveying history. In the 2007 organized by the public television broadcaster RTP , he finished 26th in the election of the “Greatest Portuguese of All Time” ( Os Grandes Portugueses ).
