Cromlech from Xerez
Coordinates: 38 ° 27 '12.3 " N , 7 ° 22' 15.5" W.
The cromlech of Xerez was about 3 km south of Monsaraz , 100 m west of the road to Mourão in the Alentejo in Portugal . The monument has since been moved to Telheiro, north of Monsaraz.
The rectangular arrangement of the approximately 50 small menhirs around a larger one, which falls completely outside the framework of the Portuguese cromlechs or stone circles, is not based on a finding, but corresponds to the idea of its discoverer. None of the small stones are in situ. The central, larger phallic menhir resembles other, stand-alone menhirs such as the menhir of Almendres or that of Oteiro. The central arrangement is reminiscent of the Portela de Mogos .
The smaller stones were found in 1968 at a lower point and placed around the large menhir; Later it was brought to its current location to protect it from flooding by the Alqueva reservoir, which was completed in 2002 .
