life and work

Michael Biberstein was a self-taught painter . From 1964 to 1978 he lived in the USA and from 1966 to 1968 he studied art history at Swarthmore College in Philadelphia. The first artistic activities took place at the suggestion of David Sylvester . Michael Biberstein received instructions in copper printing from Peter Kneubühler . He worked as an art historian, draftsman, sculptor and graphic artist. Between 1966 and 1970, Biberstein traveled to Greece, Egypt, Iceland, India, Australia and Japan.

In 1979 Biberstein moved to Sintra in Portugal. He later lived with Alandroal in the Alentejo region .

Biberstein exhibited in internationally renowned museums, and in 1992 he was a participant in documenta IX in Kassel. As part of a planned renovation of the Santa Isabel Church in Lisbon, Biberstein submitted a draft and worked on this project until his death.

“Michael Biberstein painted a landscape. Not painted from nature - he invented landscapes in order to be able to paint them. Earthly landscape and cosmic landscape. Because what he painted has become a landscape: “You have to look at a landscape so that you can see it”. During one of our first conversations, he surprised me with a very unique term, a noun: Not simply: seeing, but: seeing the landscape. Not just: looking, but: looking at the landscape. I was also surprised because he made it clear that it is not just about looking at an existing landscape, a beautiful landscape, an enchanting, breathtaking landscape. With his bold noun, he asks us to see the landscape in the things we look at. The structures and signs of these landscapes. "
