Peter Kneubühler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter Kneubühler (* 1944 in Zurich ; † September 15, 1999 there ) was a Swiss copper printer.

Life

With his copperplate printing, Kneubühler was able to combine the joy of experimentation with the greatest technical precision, and for many artists he was not just a performer, but an indispensable partner in the creative process.

During his apprenticeship as a book and offset printer, Kneubühler was interested in hand printing techniques such as linoleum and woodcuts and later also in gravure . Under the guidance of the artist Franz Anatol Wyss , he acquired the necessary technical tools. In 1972 he founded his first copper printing workshop in Grüningen ZH and began to work closely with Wyss. Three years later, the company moved to Zurich and founded the Peter Kneubühler copperplate printing studio on Kreuzstrasse. Other artists joined him in Zurich and in 1976 began his intensive collaboration with André Thomkins .

In 1985 the company moved to a larger location, Seebahnstrasse 113 in Zurich. There Kneubühler worked with numerous well-known artists such as Mario Merz , Markus Raetz , Martin Disler , Klaudia Schifferle , Leiko Ikemura , James Turrell and Luc Tuymans .

In 1986 he married the Zurich gallery owner Esther Hufschmid, with whom he founded a gallery for printmaking and he became a partner in Edition CESTIO for original printmaking.

In 1990 the graphic collection of the ETH Zurich organized the exhibition "The copper printer Peter Kneubühler and his artists", for which the publication "KUPFER DRUCK" was created.

In 1996, he was able to receive for its cultural merits the honor of handing the Canton of Zurich and received from the city of Zurich the order, the so-called murerplan reprint of 1567 with the original printing plates.

He died on September 15, 1999 after a brief illness.

Afterlife

Kneubühler has left an impressive archive with around 1900 sheets and 150 portfolios by world-famous artists and it was his wish that this collection should be preserved as a unit. The Peter Kneubühler Foundation was established in Zurich as early as October 1999 with the aim of "maintaining the entire collection of graphics from Peter Kneubühler's copperplate printing studio integrally and making them accessible to posterity".

In 2001 the exhibition “Peter Kneubühler Gut zum Druck - Old Techniques for Contemporary Images” was held in the Helmhaus in Zurich.

In 2004 the traveling exhibition "Image to Print - Peter Kneubühler and Artists of His Studio" was shown in Eastern Europe.

In 2008 the ETH Graphic Collection was able to acquire a large part of the printer archive from Peter Kneubühler and celebrated this with the exhibition of some selected works.
