Diogo Lopes de Sequeira
Diogo Lopes de Sequeira (* around 1465 in Alandroal , † around 1530 ) was a Portuguese navigator and explorer.
In 1504 he became the commander of a ship that sailed to India. Ferdinand Magellan accompanied his expedition. Five years later, in 1509, he explored the islands of Sumatra and the city of Malacca as the leader of an expedition to the Spice Islands. He also explored the island of Ternate, which belongs to the Moluccas . In 1512 he returned to Portugal in poor health , also because he feared persecution by the Sultan Mahmud Shah of Malacca . From 1518 to 1522 he was governor of Portuguese India . In 1520 he led a sea expedition to the Red Sea , on which the first Portuguese embassy was sent to Ethiopia .
