Odeleite is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Castro Marim , in the Algarve . It has 763 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
According to the history of the entire district, Odeleite was probably also a prehistoric settlement area before it became part of the Roman province of Lusitania . After the invasion of Germanic tribes in the 5th century AD, the Moors conquered the area in the early 8th century. They maintained an agricultural production unit (Qarya) in today's Odeleite. The current place name also goes back to the Arabs, who called the river wdi al-laban ( Portuguese : Rio de Leite, German: river made of milk) running here . In the course of the Reconquista , Paio Peres Correia conquered the current district of Castro Marim in 1242 , under King D.Afonso III. first gave town rights in 1277 .
Odeleite has been an independent community since the 16th century and has its own church.
Culture and sights
The monuments of the municipality include various windmills, the cemetery, and the three-aisled parish church Igreja Paroquial de Odeleite (also Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Visitação ) from the 16th century. The historic center of Odeleite as a whole is also a listed building.
The archaeological excavations Alcarias de Odeleite trace the agricultural production site (Qarya) of the Arabs , which was established here from the 8th century .
A viewpoint (Miradouro) is set up on a hill , which gives a wide view of the surrounding area, u. a. to the nearby reservoirs Odeleite and Beliche .
With the Casa de Odeleite , a local museum was opened in June 2012, which is to be followed by the rural tourism facilities .
