The Odeleite dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Odeleite ) is located in the Algarve region of Portugal in the Faro district . It dams the Odeleite , a right (western) tributary of the Guadiana to a reservoir (port. Albufeira da Barragem de Odeleite ). The eponymous municipality of Odeleite is at the northern end of the dam, the small town of Castro Marim approx. 15 km southeast of the dam.
The project to build the dam began in 1992. The construction was completed in 1997. In addition to the drinking water supply, the dam is also used for irrigation. It is owned by INAG .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a CFR dam with a height of 65 m above the foundation level (50 m above the river bed). The crest of the dam is at a height of 55 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 350 m and its width 12 m. The road IC27 runs on the top of the dam. The volume of the structure is 1 million m³.
The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 375 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 1,287 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 2,350 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 5,000 years.
Reservoir
With a normal storage target of 52 m (maximum 55.16 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 7.2 km² and holds 130 million m³ of water - of which 117 million m³ can be used. The minimum congestion target is 26 m.
