The Beliche dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Beliche ) is located in the Algarve region of Portugal in the Faro district . It dams the Beliche , a right (western) tributary of the Guadiana to a reservoir (port. Albufeira da Barragem de Beliche ). The municipality of Azinhal is about two kilometers northeast, the small town of Castro Marim about ten kilometers southeast of the dam.
The project to build the dam began in 1979. The construction was completed in 1986. In addition to the drinking water supply, the dam is also used for irrigation. It is owned by INAG .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a dam (rock embankment dam with clay core) with a height of 54 m above the foundation level (42 m above the river bed). The top of the dam is at a height of 54.3 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 527 m and its width 12 m. The volume of the dam is 991,000 m³.
The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 68 (or 30) m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 267 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 456 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once every 1,000 years.
Reservoir
With a normal storage target of 52 m (maximum 53.94 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 2.92 km² and holds 48 million m³ of water - of which 47.6 million m³ can be used. The minimum stowage destination is 27 m.
