Castelo Branco is a Portuguese town and municipality on the island of Faial , which belongs to the Azores archipelago .
The Horta Airport is located in the community.
In addition to the parish church of Santa Catarina de Alexandria , the parish's sights include the eponymous volcanic rock formation Morro de Castelo Branco (from Port. Castelo Branco , in German "White Castle", alluding to the shape and color of the rock formation).
history
After King Manuel I first ordered the establishment of a community in the area in 1514, the first documented mention of the village comes from July 30, 1568.
In 1585 the community had 350 inhabitants in 120 households, in 1643 there were 1,042 inhabitants in 245 households. In 1767 today's larger and more elaborate church was built.
From the mid-1950s in particular, there was a strong wave of emigration to North America (USA and Canada) and Europe (in addition to continental Portugal, especially France). Emigration from the community has continued since then, even if it has slowed down significantly in the meantime. The main stages of development were the opening of the airport in 1971 and the economic development of Portugal after the Carnation Revolution in 1974 and the EU accession in 1986.
Culture and sights
The parish church Igreja Paroquial de Castelo Branco (also Igreja de Santa Catarina de Alexandria ), newly built in 1767, goes back to the first church in the village, which was officially documented for the first time in 1568. Today's parish church is a listed building.
The Bairro da Carreira residential area, which was built after 1946 and inaugurated in 1953 as part of the Estado Novo dictatorship's social housing program for poor families, is also a listed building.
The karate club Clube de Karaté Do Shotokan O Morro , the soccer club Clube Recreio e Fraternidade founded in 1917 , and the versatile sports club Castelo Branco Sport Club are the most important sports clubs in the municipality. Various folk dance , music, scouting and cultural associations are active in Castelo Branco.
