history

The craft school in Capelo

Capelo emerged in the course of the 16th century and became an independent municipality around 1600.

In 1672 the place was largely destroyed when the volcano Cabeço do Fogo erupted. The place then recovered. The municipality was later expanded to include the previously independent municipality of Praia do Norte . In 1845 Praia do Norte became independent again.

The healing powers of the thermal springs were first discovered in Varadouro in 1868, and the thermal baths opened there in 1954 .

Some of the main attractions of Faial Island are in the municipality of Capelo. The volcano Capelinhos and the elevation of the Cabeço Gordo with its Caldeira and in it the lake Lagoa da Caldeira belong to it, as well as the lighthouse Farol de Vale Formoso . This was built in the late 1950s as a replacement for the Farol da Ponta dos Capelinhos , which had to be shut down in September 1957 after a volcanic eruption . The impressively deformed landscape around the lighthouse ruins of Capelinhos is one of the most important sights of the municipality. A visitor center and museum has been set up there, and hiking trails lead through the area, including in the adjacent nature reserve Reserva Florestal de Recreio do Capelo .

There is also the beach of Varadouro, where thermal springs are open to visitors.
