Salão is a town and municipality on Faial , an island in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores .

On the outskirts of the village is the 5 hectare nature reserve Parque Florestal do Cabouco Velho .

History and sights

Holy Spirit Chapel Império do Divino Espírito Santo do Salão

Salão was settled from around 1620 when emigrants from Cedros settled here.

Today you can reach Salão over a bridge, on the pillars of which the years 1998, 1938 and 1883 remind of the destruction of the bridge by earthquakes.

The place was last badly damaged by an earthquake in July 1998. The parish church Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Socorro , which was built in 1780 and has not yet been rebuilt , also collapsed .

The Holy Spirit Chapel Império do Divino Espírito Santo do Salão and the small fishing port of Porto do Salão with its natural swimming pool were spared the earthquake .
