Ribeirinha is a town and municipality on Faial , an island in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores .
The abandoned Ribeirinha lighthouse and the Miradouro da Ribeirinha viewpoint are in the municipality.
History and sights
The village emerged from the end of the 16th and beginning of the 17th century. The Franciscan and historian Diogo das Chagas noted in 1643 a population of 254 in 71 households.
The Ribeirinha lighthouse was built in 1919. It was so badly damaged in the earthquake in July 1998 that it had to be abandoned.
The place was badly damaged in the earthquake in July 1998. The small fishing port of Porto da Boca da Ribeira with a small seaman's chapel has been preserved. In the center of the village is the Holy Spirit chapel Império do Divino Espírito Santo da Ribeirinha , on the facade of which the year 1955 indicates the year of construction. The three-aisled parish church Igreja de São Mateus was consecrated in 1934 after the previous building, built in 1666, was destroyed in an earthquake in 1926. It too fell victim to the July 1998 earthquake, but long-term reconstruction is planned. The Igreja de São Antonio church in the Espalhafatos district, built in 1970, also destroyed in 1998, was rebuilt in 2006.
