Praia do Norte is one of the 32 glyphosate-free municipalities in Portugal (as of March 2018).
history
The place mentioned in 1567 was completely destroyed in 1672 when the volcano Cabeço do Fogo erupted . Praia do Norte was also directly affected by the earthquakes that accompanied the formation of the Vulcão dos Capelinhos in 1957 and 1958. The village church Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Dores was rebuilt in 1960/1961 to replace the collapsed previous building.
On December 9, 2005, the container ship CP Valor ran aground off Praia do Norte. On the way from Montreal to Valencia , it had called the Baía da Praia do Norte (also Baía da Ribeira das Cabras ) to repair an engine failure while at anchor. When all attempts to get it afloat again failed, the ship had to be abandoned and scrapped on site. When the wreck was towed, it sank about 25 miles north of Faial in September 2006.
