Praia do Almoxarife is a town and municipality on Faial , an island in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores . The eponymous beach and the Poço das Asas green area with waterfall are the most famous attractions of the community.

history

Park and Chapel of the Holy Spirit

Praia do Almoxarife is the oldest village on the island of Faial, as the Flemish navigator Joss van Hurtere is said to have landed here with 15 settlers from Flanders in 1465 . A settlement soon developed on the local, gently sloping sandy beach where the Ribeira da Praia , a freshwater stream, flows into the sea. On September 21, 1597 the place, which was originally called Praia de Santo Cristo, was pillaged and burned by British pirates. The place was later rebuilt and had 1643 305 inhabitants in 43 households. In 1926 almost all houses were destroyed or badly damaged in an earthquake, of 220 only 16 remained habitable.

Site and architecture

The place has in places the character of a street village , in places that of a cluster village . Only around the central square, Largo Coronel Silva Leal, with its shady trees, is there a closed development, while open development predominates in the area. In the Rua da Igreja there are still some houses from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, which are now listed. Also in Rua Padre António Cândido Avelar you can still find examples of typical architecture from the early 20th century; the houses were destroyed in the earthquake of 1926 and then rebuilt in their original style.

The strikingly large parish church Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Graça , one of the oldest churches on the entire island, was mentioned for the first time in 1568 and burned down by British pirates in 1597. In 1758 it was rebuilt in the Baroque style with two towers visible from afar and two side chapels. The church was severely damaged in the earthquake on July 9, 1998, but the damage has now been repaired. A large wooden crucifix is kept in the church , around which the "legend of the lost arm" is entwined: The cross is said to have been found here on the beach in the 16th or 17th century, although the figure of Christ was missing an arm. The crucifix was placed in the church, and attempts were made to carve and attach a suitable arm out of wood - but to no avail. Years later, while searching for firewood, villagers found the arm on the coast between washed up driftwood without initially recognizing it as such. However, when the arm was not burned, it was recognized and attached to the crucifix, which has since been widely admired.

A small park with a pavilion was created in front of the church. Here is also the Holy Spirit Chapel Império da Trindade , on the facade of which the year 1873 indicates the year of construction and the indication 1943 the year of renovation.
