History and sights

View of Flamengos (1966)

The municipality is located in the fertile valley of Vale da Ribeira dos Flamengos , above the capital and port city of Horta , 4 km away , to whose district it belongs as well as the twelve other municipalities on the island.

The name of the place, which was founded at the same time as Horta and spreads in the valley of the Ribeira dos Flamengos , goes back to Flemish settlers. They had already settled here in the 15th century under the leadership of the Flemish nobleman Josse van Huerter, who became liege lord of the entire island in 1468. The location of the village in the interior of the island soon proved to be advantageous, as the houses could not be seen from the sea and Flamengos therefore did not suffer from pirate attacks as often as many of the coastal towns in the Azores. Van Huerter introduced the pastel dye plant , which soon helped the town to a modest level of prosperity. The three-aisled parish church Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz was built in the 16th century ; it was looted and set on fire by English corsairs in 1597, rebuilt in 1606 and rebuilt in 1736. After it was destroyed by the earthquake on June 9, 1998, the church was rebuilt and rededicated on April 3, 2016.

The Ponte dos Flamengos bridge

In the 20th century, the place was hit several times by severe earthquakes: in 1926, more than half of the buildings were destroyed. There were further earthquakes with greater damage on November 23, 1973 and June 9, 1998.

The most striking buildings in the area include the Ponte dos Flamengos bridge, built in 1903–1908, and the Fontanário das Bicas fountain from 1852. In Flamengos, a botanical garden with a size of 8,000 m² was laid out in 1986, with numerous endemic plants from the Azores Medicinal plants can be seen.
