The Kozákov (German Kosakow ) is the highest peak of the Český ráj ( Bohemian Paradise ), 744 m, in the Czech Republic . Kozákov became famous for the gemstones found on its slopes , such as agate , jasper , amethyst , smoky quartz and olivine . Gemstones from Kozákov decorate z. B. the St. Wenceslas Chapel in St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague . The western flank of the mountain has been protected as a national natural monument on 159 hectares since 1985 .
Location and surroundings
Kozákov is located in the northern part of the Bohemian Paradise, 9 km east of Turnov (Turnau) . It is part of the Ještědsko-kozákovský hřbet and forms the highest point of the Kozákovsky hřbet . At the foot of the mountain massif in the north are the towns of Železný Brod and Semily . On the flanks of the mountain are the small villages Komárov and Kozákov.
history
Since ancient times, gemstones have been found on the mountain that are processed on site in Kozákov and Turnov. An old saying goes that the stone that the shepherd throws at the cow is worth more than the whole herd.
The products of prehistoric stone cutters who worked in caves at the foot of Kozákov can be found throughout the area of the Bohemian Paradise. The workshops were considered since the first excavations in the 1930s äneolithisch . More recent findings suggest a possible backdating to the Mesolithic .
In 1928 the Czech Tourist Club (KČT ) inaugurated the Riegrová Chata ( Rieger Baude ), which still exists today . This building soon had to be expanded, this happened in 1939. In 1962 the building burned down, but it could be rebuilt afterwards. In 1994 a steel observation tower was built next to the hut, which also serves as a television converter and mobile radio station.
view
The view from the summit is very comprehensive, in the south the view sweeps over the sandstone rock areas of the Bohemian Paradise, in the north the ridge of the Jizera / Giant Mountains delimits the horizon. Dominants in the field of vision are the ruins of Trosky Castle and the slim shape of the Jeschken .
Paths to the summit
- A public road leads over the summit area, so you can drive up with your own vehicle.
- The main hiking trail of the Bohemian Paradise, the Zlatá Stezka Českeho Ráje ( Golden Path ) , leads over the summit . From Malá Skála this path leads with great views over the Hamštejnský hřeben ( Hammstein ridge ) to the summit.
