Bridge in Idanha-a-Nova County

The 80 km long trail bears the official number GR 12 and covers sections of the European long-distance hiking trail E7 . The path is classified as moderate and leads from Idanha-a-Nova to the thermal baths of Monfortinho , the Termas de Monfortinho .

The route in the Grande Rota network is looked after by the Portuguese hiking association Federação de Campismo e Montanhismo de Portugal (FCMP). Extensions of the GR 12 along the Tejo River and the E7 are in progress and will be gradually recognized by the FCMP, for example the section between Abrantes and Constância .

The path is named after the historical place name Idanha , which goes back to the Roman foundation Civitas Igaeditanorum , today's Idanha-a-Velha . The path leads through the region of the Beira Baixa , which is characterized by smallholder agriculture , which marks the transition from the mountainous, rugged Beira Alta region to the wide plains of the Alentejo . The path passes reservoirs, rock formations and old towns, including some of the Aldeias Históricas de Portugal such as Idanha-a-Velha and Monsanto .
