Monsanto

Monsanto is a freguesia of Portugal , with an area of 132 square kilometers and 828 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). It is one of the twelve historic villages, the Aldeias Históricas .

geography

The place is located on a mountain, northeast of Idanha-a-Nova , which rises up to 758 meters above sea level. The rock of the mountain is granite , from which the historical village visible today is built.

history

The earliest human traces date from the Early Stone Age . The Romans settled at the foot of the mountain. There are also traces of the passage of Visigoths and Arabs . In the 12th century took Alfonso I , during the Reconquista called Christian reconquest of the Iberian peninsula, the possession of the area and donated it in 1165 to the Knights Templar to care, under the condition above and below the former bishop's Idanha to create two new protected castles. Under the leadership of the order master Gualdim Pais , Monsanto was built as a second castle next to Idanha-a-Nova . Sancho I later had the castle rebuilt.

It was the headquarters of a separate district ( concelho ) between 1174 and the 19th century.

In 1939, the place was named the most Portuguese village in a nationwide competition organized by the Estado Novo regime's state propaganda .
