The red-tooth triggerfish ( Odonus niger ) or blue triggerfish is a species of the triggerfish family (Balistidae).
It lives in the Red Sea and the Indo-Pacific from the coast of East Africa to South Africa , Japan , New Caledonia to the Marquesas and the Society Islands at depths of 3 to 35 meters. The fish live in loose schools over coral reefs in lagoons and on outer reefs. They become 50 centimeters long.
For reproduction, harem groups are formed from one male and up to ten females, all of which spawn together. The males guard the spawn until the fish larvae hatch.
Red-tooth triggerfish feed on zooplankton , which they usually capture in the open water, a few meters above the bottom. They also eat benthic invertebrates such as sponges , molluscs and crabs .
Aquarium keeping
Red-tooth triggerfish are far more peaceful than other species in their family. They can therefore be kept in a very large saltwater aquarium. They also don't go for hard and soft corals .
