Culture and sights
Castelo Mendo has been one of the twelve particularly protected and subsidized historic villages, the Aldeias Históricas , since 1998 . Its numerous architectural monuments include some Manueline mansions , various sacred buildings, fountains, stone crosses and public buildings. The castle complex from the 13th century, which has been a listed building since 1946, should be mentioned in particular.
Something special about Castelo Mendo are its old mulberry trees . They stand individually in place. According to one story, a king once tried to plant mulberries, which silkworms would use as a natural source of food. However, the company failed; the mulberry trees grew anyway and are accessible to everyone. They are even made into a local alcoholic specialty.
