Fornos de Algodres is a vila (small town) and a district ( concelho ) in Portugal . The municipality of Fornos de Algodres has 1627 inhabitants, the entire district 4991 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

The district was formed in 1836 through the merger of the previously independent district of Algodres with other surrounding towns. In 1898, further incorporations were made, namely the previously independent districts of Além-Mondego, Juncais and Vila Ruiva.

Fornos de Algodres is the seat of the district of the same name. The neighboring districts are (starting clockwise in the north): Trancoso , Celorico da Beira , Gouveia , Mangualde , Penalva do Castelo and Aguiar da Beira .

With the regional reform in September 2013, several municipalities were merged into new municipalities, so that the number of municipalities decreased from 16 to twelve.

Culture and sights

The megalithic complexes Cortiçô de Algodres and Dólmen de Matança can be visited. There are also over 120 monuments in the community, including a number of mansions , sacred buildings , fountains and monuments. Roman roads , medieval buildings, geological formations and the nature of the adjacent Serra da Estrela nature reserve can be explored on various thematically arranged hiking and circular routes . A river pool is ideal for swimming and water sports.

The municipality is known nationwide for its cheese specialties, which are assigned to the Queijo Serra da Estrela .
