history

Presumably the place originated around 1200 in the course of the settlement policy of D.Sancho I in the course of the consolidation of the independent kingdom of Portugal . King D Dinis first granted Algodres city rights ( Foral ) in 1311 , which King Manuel I renewed in 1514 . In 1811 the place was raised to Vila (small town). The previously independent district of Algodres was united with that of Fornos in 1821 and received its current name. The seat was Fornos, which has now been expanded to include de Algodres .

Culture and sights

In addition to the old town hall, a small manor house ( solar ) and the stone fountain system Fonte do Cabeço , various sacred buildings are listed here, including the parish church Igreja Paroquial de Algodres (also Igreja de Santa Maria Maior ) , which was originally built in the 12th century . After several renovations and extensions, the originally Romanesque church now shows Mannerist and Baroque elements, in particular the Mannerist side reredos made of gilded wood carving ( Talha dourada ).

Also worth seeing is the baroque church Igreja da Misericórdia de Algodres, built in 1621, with its rococo side tabs made of polished wood and the bell tower on the side.

The characteristic stake ( Pelourinho ) was erected in 1514 as a sign of the renewed city rights by King Manuel I.
