Matança is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Fornos de Algodres . It has a population of 243 (as of June 30, 2011).

history

Finds prove the prehistoric presence of humans here. The Romans also left traces here, including two bridges that have been preserved. In the course of the Reconquista and the consolidation of the independent Kingdom of Portugal , the place was repopulated and finally received its first city rights ( Foral ) by King D.Afonso III in 1270 . In 1514 King Manuel I renewed the city charter .

Matança remained the seat of an independent district ( concelho ) until it was dissolved in 1836 and incorporated into the newly created district of Fornos de Algodres.

In addition to the stake, the two Roman bridges and the Roman fountain, various sacred buildings are listed here, including the parish church Igreja Paroquial de Matança (also Igreja de Santa Maria Madalena ) from the 14th century.

The dolmen of Matança and the prehistoric necropolis of Forcadas ( Conjunto de sepulturas escavadas na rocha ) are also protected and can be visited.
