Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo (German: fig tree of the Rodrigo Castle) is a small town ( Vila ) and a district ( concelho ) in Portugal with 2211 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

After the historical place Castelo Rodrigo had lost its importance, in particular due to the destruction suffered in 1762 during the Seven Years' War and in 1810 in the course of the Napoleonic invasions , most of its inhabitants settled in the neighboring S.Vicente da Figueira. In 1836 , S.Vicente became an independent district, to which the simultaneously dissolved district of Castelo Rodrigo was assigned. The name was changed to Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo to reflect the formative history of Castelo Rodrigo.

Culture and sights

The town center as a whole is a listed building. Its architectural monuments include various historical public buildings, fountains and sacred buildings , including the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição , which was only built in the mid-20th century
