history

Rock paintings and grave finds document human settlement in the area since the Paleolithic . The Romans also left numerous traces. After them the Suebi and Visigoths settled here until the Moors invaded . The Arabs lived here until they were expelled in 1065 . However, in the further course of the Reconquista, Mêda was overshadowed by strategically important places such as Marialva or Longroiva .

In 1519 King Manuel I renewed Mêda’s previous city rights. In the following epochs, especially after the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in Portugal in 1822, the district gained increasing importance through incorporations, and formerly larger towns were now subordinate to it.

On January 26, 2005 Mêda was raised from the status of a vila (small town) to a cidade (town).

Culture and sights

Hiking trails, bike paths, thermal baths, historical places and a multitude of sacred, public and private monuments can be found in the district.

With Marialva here is one of the twelve historical villages, the Historic villages of Portugal . In other places in the district, too, tourism rural in particular has seen an upswing as a result.
