Odeceixe ( pronunciation : [ ɞdɘsɘiʃɘ ]) is a small town and municipality on the west coast of the Algarve in southern Portugal .
The city is located on the Ribeira de Seixe River , the border with Odemira County and the Alentejo . It is also located in the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina , a nature reserve that covers the lower section of the south-west Portuguese coast.
history
The origins of the village seem to be in the Moorish era. Originally the place was called Ceixe (from the Arabic sayh , about river or river course), after the name of the river Ribeira de Seixe that passed here at the time .
During the Christian Reconquista , Odeceixe came to the Kingdom of Portugal around 1242 .
King D. Sebastião stayed here for three days in 1578. Shortly afterwards he died in the battle of Alcácer-Quibir , with traumatic consequences for Portugal.
Odeceixe suffered severe damage during the earthquake of 1755 .
The place was raised to a small town ( Vila ) on July 12, 2001 .
