Vila Nova de Cerveira is a small town ( Vila ) and a district ( Município or Concelho ) in Portugal with 9253 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

Finds and excavations prove a prehistoric settlement up to the arrival of the Romans from the 2nd century BC. They won gold in mines in what is now Covas parish. The present-day place, however, did not emerge until the beginning of the 13th century AD, and took over the name of the area known as Cerveira. King D Dinis gave the place its first town charter ( Foral ) in 1321 , which was renewed in 1512 by King Manuel I as part of his administrative reforms.

The site became the site of the Battle of Vilanova on September 17, 1658.

Culture and sights

The main church ( Igreja Matriz ) of the place

The art exhibition Bienal de Cerveira , which has been taking place every two years since 1978 , is well-known. In addition to the exhibitions, this includes workshops, discussions and lectures, creative work stays by artists, performances and concerts. The Fórum Cultural de Cerveira building complex is also a place for exhibitions and other art events outside of the Biennale. In general, art is a focal point for the place, which is also called Vila das Artes ( Portuguese for: (small) town of art). For example, the city maintains an artist house for creative guest stays in the Casa do Artista "Pintor Jaime Isidoro" , which is dedicated to art in all forms, from painting and sculpture to theater, dance, electronic art and photography to music and other art forms. The CineTeatro , which has been converted into a cultural and event center , the city archive ( Arquivo Municipal ), the library ( Biblioteca ), and the Casa do Turismo , housed in a two-storey historic house from the 19th century , with the tourist office , plastic art exhibitions and the coordination office for cultural and other associations in the district, are other places of art to be mentioned in Vila Nova de Cerveira.

The architectural monuments in the district include mansions , historical public buildings, stone fountains, the castle, and a variety of sacred buildings , including the three-aisled Igreja Matriz de Vila Nova de Cerveira (also Igreja de São Cipriano ). The baroque church originally built in the 16th century contains u. a. a golden baroque altar. The historic center of Vila Nova de Cerveira, criss-crossed by narrow streets, is also a listed building as a whole.

The Aquamuseu do Rio Minho

The Iron Age archaeological site in the municipality of Lovelhe, the castle, the Aquamuseu do Rio Minho , which opened in 2005 and is dedicated to the river, its history and its flora and fauna, and the handicraft center Casa do Artesão , housed in the former market hall, are further points of interest for visitors.
