Paredes de Coura is a small town ( Vila ) and a district ( Concelho ) in Portugal with 1598 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). The place is particularly known for its annual rock music festival.
history
Dolmens and other finds attest to prehistoric settlement in the area, and there are also significant finds from Roman times, such as mansions along the Roman military road that passes here.
The oldest document of the place is an exchange of letters regarding a gift from Queen Teresa . Under King D. João I , the place was an independent circle (" concelho "). The borders of the district of Coura, renewed and redefined by King Manuel I with the Administrative Law Document ("Foral") of April 13, 1515, extended to the river of the Rio Minho .
The district only got its current name in 1875 when the district of Coura was merged with other parishes (" Freguesias "), including the parish of Paredes, from which the authorities formed the new official name Paredes de Coura ("Walls of Coura").
Culture and sights
In addition to archaeological sites, a Roman bridge, various mansions, and churches from around the 13th and 16th centuries can be visited.
A number of hiking trails criss-cross the wooded and stream-criss-crossing areas in the district. A number of gastronomic and sporting infrastructures have been created in places on the river beach of the Rio Coura .
Every year in summer (end of July / beginning of August) the internationally important music festival that bears the name of the place has been held here since 1993. Thousands then come to see the performances of the bands of different varieties of rock music and the like. to attend. In 2011 bands like Pulp , Mogwai or … And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead were guests here.
