Encumeada Pass

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Encumeada Pass ( Portuguese : Boca da Encumeada ) is a 1007 meter high pass crossing between Ribeira Brava in the south and São Vicente in the north of Madeira Island . In addition to the Poiso Pass ( Paso do Poiso ), it is one of the transitions from the southern part of the island to the northern part. The road ER228 runs over the Encumeada pass, which leaves the expressway at Serra de Água and from which the ER110 road, which is often closed due to the risk of falling rocks, branches off at the top of the pass and climbs to the higher plateau Paul da Serra . The pass is crossed by the 3086 meter long Túnel da Encumeada road tunnel of the VE4 expressway, opened in 2002.

tourism

The pass offers excellent views of both the south and north coasts in good weather. The top of the pass is the starting point for several levada hikes along the Levada do Norte. The Pico Ruivo , the highest point on the island, can also be reached on a longer hike. Several smaller tourist businesses have settled at the top of the pass, a larger hotel is located a few hundred meters south on the road.
