Six kilometers north of the pass is Ribeiro Frio with a trout breeding station on the edge of the UNESCO World Heritage Laurisilva Forest of Madeira . A few meters from the top of the pass is the Casa de Abrigo do Poiso restaurant in a building erected in 1850 under the then governor José Silvestre Ribeiro as a shelter.
