Ourique is a small town ( Vila ) and a district ( Concelho ) in Portugal with 2874 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

The traces of human presence in today's district lead back to the Paleolithic . The founding date of today's place is usually given as 711 , when the Moors conquered the Iberian Peninsula and founded a settlement here. The Battle of Ourique probably took place here in 1139 . This victory of the later first king of Portugal, D.Afonso Henriques , over the Arabs was a decisive step towards the independence of the Kingdom of Portugal . However, it is not clear whether the battle was actually fought on this Ourique.

King D Dinis granted Ourique its first town charter ( Foral ) in 1290 , which King Manuel I renewed in 1510 .

Culture and sights

The numerous architectural monuments of the place include various public buildings, historic residential houses and sacred buildings , including the pilgrimage church Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Cola . The single-nave baroque church from the 17th century has an altarpiece and two church towers. The excavations of the Islamic castle Castelo de Cola (also Castro de Cola and Cidade Marrachique ) mounted on a Iron Age hill fort dating back is protected.

The male choir Grupo Coral de Ourique was founded in 1947 and has performed internationally (Belgium, France) with its repertoire of the typical Alentejo singing, the Cante Alentejano . After the creation of the Portuguese television network RTP , it became the first choir to appear on the country's television in 1957.
