Cuba is a vila (small town) and a district ( concelho ) in the sub-region of the Baixo Alentejo in Portugal , with an area of 70.1 km² and a population of 3306 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). Cuba is an agricultural center of the region, and one of the places that Christopher Columbus call the son of their city.

geography

Cuba is located at an altitude of 187 m between olive groves, on the western bank of a tributary of the Ribeira de Odivelas . The city is located 18 km north of the district capital Beja.

history

Antas and other finds document human settlement in Cuba since around 3000 BC. Thebuildings foundfrom Roman times, such as bridges, reservoirs , villa rusticas, etc. a., indicate a certain importance of the place in the province of Lusitania . There are no significant findsfrom the Moorish period, which can beexplainedby the destructive battles during the Reconquista .

Conquered by Dom Sancho II from the Arab Moors, the place was called Cuba because a lot of "Cubas" (vessels for wine storage) were found or, according to another opinion, the name Cuba has an even older origin and is derived from the name " Coba ”, an Arabic diminutive that means tower. The place was officially mentioned for the first time in today's Kingdom of Portugal in the 13th century. Cuba has been an independent circle since 1782.

On January 10, 2008, old master Manoel de Oliveira's film Christopher Columbus - The Riddle in Cuba had its commercial premiere. Using numerous historical evidence, the film investigates the theory that Columbus was born as an illegitimate offspring of the Portuguese royal family in Cuba and grew up there. This is one of the reasons why he named the largest island he discovered after his hometown.
