History and sights
Viva Alva is a typical village in the historic Baixo Alentejo province , with whitewashed houses and narrow streets. Archaeological finds suggest that there was a settlement as early as the Neolithic . It has been a municipality in the Cuba County since 1854 .
Vila Alva was popular with the clergy and the aristocracy, was often visited by them, and benefited greatly from it culturally and artistically. The vineyards, the orchards, the windmills and the numerous churches with frescoes and hand-painted tiles bear witness to it.
At the entrance to the village there is the “Quinta de São José”, a manor with a manor house and the village well with the state wash tank (chafariz com lavadouro). In the center of the village are the “Praça da Republica” (German: Republic Square) and the church of “Nossa Senhora da Visitação” (German: Our Lady of the Visit). It is a very old church and is believed to have been built by the Moors after they became Christian. The current building dates from the 17th / 18th centuries. Century. There is a museum of religious art and archeology nearby.
