The red wine variety 'Castelão' , also known under the synonym 'Periquita' and 'João Santarém' , is very common and popular in Portugal . The very first bottles of red wine ever were bottled in Portugal under the name Periquita . Today most of the usual Portuguese grocery stores offer red wines made from the Castelão grape variety.

The 'Castelão' grape variety is a natural cross of the ' Cayetana Blanca ' × ' Alfrocheiro Preto ' varieties . It was named 'Periquita' by JM da Fonseca, who began producing wine in Portugal in 1834 and is now one of the largest companies.

The area under vines surveyed in 2010 was 11,088 ha . In Portugal, the 'Castelão' grape variety is approved in the regions of Trás-os-Montes , Beira Litoral , Beira Interior Sul , Ribatejo , Oeste , Alentejo , Algarve and the Azores .

Ampelographic features

  • The tip of the shoot is woolly bahaart ( indument ); whitish green; red-edged.
  • The relatively large foliage leaf has a dark green leaf blade, which is three-lobed and very hairy on the underside. The stem bay half-open and V-shaped.
  • The grape is large and shouldered several times. The berries are relatively small, round, thick-skinned and black-blue in color, have a strong scent and ripen unevenly.

Maturity: late.

Income, claims

The 'Castelão' variety is very productive and needs dry and sandy soils.

Wine

'Castelão' produces very strong and tannic red wines with a medium alcohol content , which can be enjoyed young, but can also be stored because they have a strong acidity .
